Save DC Public Schools!

The Save DC Schools campaign is fighting against Mayor Vincent Gray and Education Chancellor Kaya Henderson's attempts to close close 15 DC public schools until:
  (1) an impact study is performed to determine the impact of the last round of public school closings;
  (2) decisions about school closures and improvements are made with parent and student participation and without disparate impact on low income communities of color; and
   (3) there is a comprehensive, fair, equitable and democratic plan to solve the problems of under performing public schools and the growing population of charter schools.

Ferebee-Hope CheerleadersMember of Empower DC, including the famed Ferebee-Hope cheerleaders, spoke out during Mayor Vincent Gray's speech on public education in DC.

The speech, held on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at Savoy Elementary in SE, DC, was touted as Mayor Gray's vission "for the next phase of education reform in the District." No surprisingly, the speech revealed few new proposals or details, but instead urged unhappy District residents to "stay the course" with him and education Chancellor Kaya Henderson.

With the help of super attorney Johnny Barnes and his legal "Dream Team," Empower DC filed suit on Friday, March 29th, 2013 in DC Superior Court to prevent the District of Columbia from closing 15 public schools, an act which would disproportionately impact low income students of color.
